As this house was scheduled for demolition, damage during filming was permitted. The site is now a turf farm. Props and special effects were fairly simple and limited by the budget.

The blood, for example, was Bosco Chocolate Syrup drizzled over cast members' bodies. Costumes consisted of second-hand clothing from cast members and Goodwill.

Zombie makeup varied during the film. Initially, makeup was limited to white skin with blackened eyes; but as filming progressed, mortician's wax was used to simulate wounds and decaying flesh.

As filming was not linear, the piebald faces appear sporadically. Eastman supervised the special effects, wardrobe and makeup.

The completed film ultimately benefited from the decision, as film historian Joseph Maddrey describes the black-and-white filming as " guerrilla-style ", resembling "the unflinching authority of a wartime newsreel ".

Maddrey adds, it "seem[s] as much like a documentary on the loss of social stability as an exploitation film ". Night of the Living Dead was the first feature-length film directed by George A.

Stephen Paul Miller, for instance, witnessed "a revival of fifties schlock shock Miller admits that " Night of the Living Dead takes greater relish in mocking these military operations through the general's pompous demeanor" and the government's inability to source the zombie epidemic or protect the citizenry.

While some critics dismissed Romero's film because of the graphic scenes, writer R. Dillard claimed that the "open-eyed detailing" of taboo heightened the film's success.

He asks, "What girl has not, at one time or another, wished to kill her mother? And Karen, in the film, offers a particularly vivid opportunity to commit the forbidden deed vicariously.

Although zombie cannibals were inspired by Matheson's I Am Legend , film historian Robin Wood sees the flesh-eating scenes of Night of the Living Dead as a lates critique of American capitalism.

Wood asserts that the zombies represent capitalists, and "cannibalism represents the ultimate in possessiveness, hence the logical end of human relations under capitalism".

He argues that the zombies' victims symbolized the repression of " the Other " in bourgeois American society, namely activists in the civil rights movement , feminists , homosexuals, and counterculturalists in general.

Members of Image Ten were involved in filming and post-production , participating in loading camera magazines , gaffing , constructing props, recording sounds and editing.

As I recall, I shot over 1, pictures during the production". Columbia and American International Pictures declined after requests to soften it and re-shoot the final scene were rejected by producers.

We couldn't imagine a happy ending. Everyone want[ed] a Hollywood ending, but we stuck to our guns". Most of the music in the film had previously been used on the soundtrack for the science-fiction B-movie Teenagers from Outer Space , as well as a number of pieces used in the classic Steve McQueen western series Wanted Dead or Alive — The eerie musical piece during the tense scene in the film where Ben finds the rifle in the closet inside the farmhouse as the radio reports of mayhem play in the background, can be heard in longer and more complete form during the opening credits and the beginning of The Devil's Messenger starring Lon Chaney, Jr.

Another piece, accompanying Barbra's flight from the cemetery zombie, was taken from the score for The Hideous Sun Demon According to WRS, "We chose a selection of music for each of the various scenes and then George made the final selections.

We then took those selections and augmented them electronically". Sound tech R. Lococo's choices worked well, as film historian Sumiko Higashi believes that the music "signifies the nature of events that await".

In , recording group Lonely Things released the album Tonight of the Living Dead , "an instrumental album composed entirely of ambient music and sound effects sampled from Romero's horror classic".

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times chided theater owners and parents who allowed children access to the film with such potent content for a horror film they were entirely unprepared for: "I don't think the younger kids really knew what hit them," he said.

The kids in the audience were stunned. There was almost complete silence. The movie had stopped being delightfully scary about halfway through, and had become unexpectedly terrifying.

There was a little girl across the aisle from me, maybe nine years old, who was sitting very still in her seat and crying It's hard to remember what sort of effect this movie might have had on you when you were six or seven.

But try to remember. At that age, kids take the events on the screen seriously, and they identify fiercely with the hero. When the hero is killed, that's not an unhappy ending but a tragic one: Nobody got out alive.

It's just over, that's all. Response from Variety after the initial release reflects the outrage generated by Romero's film: "Until the Supreme Court establishes clear-cut guidelines for the pornography of violence, Night of the Living Dead will serve nicely as an outer-limit definition by example.

In [a] mere 90 minutes this horror film pun intended casts serious aspersions on the integrity and social responsibility of its Pittsburgh-based makers, distributor Walter Reade, the film industry as a whole and [exhibitors] who book [the picture], as well as raising doubts about the future of the regional cinema movement and about the moral health of film goers who cheerfully opt for this unrelieved orgy of sadism One commentator asserts that the film garnered little attention from critics, "except to provoke argument about censoring its grisly scenes".

Despite the controversy, five years after the premiere Paul McCullough of Take One observed that Night of the Living Dead was the "most profitable horror film ever It was translated into more than 25 languages and released across Europe, Canada and Australia.

Fifty years after its release, the film enjoys a reputation as a classic and still receives positive reviews, being regarded by many as one of the best films of The site's critical consensus reads, "George A.

Romero's debut set the template for the zombie film, and features tight editing, realistic gore, and a sly political undercurrent.

Night of the Living Dead was awarded two distinguished honors decades after its debut. The Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry in with other films deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".

Some reviewers disliked the film's gory special effects. Variety labeled Night of the Living Dead an "unrelieved orgy of sadism" and questioned the "integrity and social responsibility of its Pittsburgh-based makers".

Some reviewers cited the film as groundbreaking. Pauline Kael called the film "one of the most gruesomely terrifying movies ever made — and when you leave the theatre you may wish you could forget the whole horrible experience.

The film's grainy, banal seriousness works for it — gives it a crude realism". It is unthinkable for anyone seriously interested in horror movies not to see it.

Night of the Living Dead entered the public domain in the United States because the original theatrical distributor, the Walter Reade Organization, failed to place a copyright indication on the prints, [79] and at that time, United States copyright law held that public dissemination required copyright notice to maintain a copyright.

This release was also not authorized or licensed by Image Ten. The first revisions of Night of the Living Dead involved colorization by home video distributors.

Hal Roach Studios released a colorized version in that featured ghouls with pale green skin. Tooze wrote that "The colorization is damn impressive", but noticed the print used was not as sharp as other releases of the film.

In , co-writer John A. In an interview with Fangoria magazine, Russo explained that he wanted to "give the movie a more modern pace".

The additions are neither clearly identified nor even listed. Entertainment Weekly reported "no bad blood" between Russo and Romero.

A collaborative animated project known as Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated was screened at several film festivals [] [] [] [] and was released onto DVD on July 27, , by Wild Eye Releasing.

Night of the Living Dead is the first of six Each film traces the evolution of the living dead epidemic in the United States and humanity's desperate attempts to cope with it.

As in Night of the Living Dead , Romero peppered the other films in the series with critiques specific to the periods in which they were released.

Russo's film spawned four sequels. Return of the Living Dead sparked a legal battle with Romero, who believed Russo marketed his film in direct competition with Day of the Dead as a sequel to the original film.

In the case Dawn Associates v. Links , Romero accused Russo of "appropriat[ing] part of the title of the prior work", plagiarizing Dawn of the Dead' s advertising slogan "When there is no more room in hell Romero was ultimately granted a restraining order that forced Russo to cease his advertising campaign.

Russo, however, was allowed to retain his title. George Cameron Romero, the son of director George A.

Romero, has developed Rise of the Living Dead , a prelude to his father's classic pitched with the working title Origins. George Cameron Romero's script is intended to be an homage to his father's work, a glimpse into the political turmoil of the mid-to-late s and a bookend piece to his father's original story.

Despite raising funds for the film on Indiegogo in , the film has yet to go into production as of May The first remake , debuting in , was directed by special effects artist Tom Savini.

It was based on the original screenplay, but included more gore and a revised plot that portrayed Barbra Patricia Tallman as a capable and active heroine.

Tony Todd played the role of Ben. Film historian Barry Grant saw the new Barbra as a corrective on the part of Romero.

He suggests that the character was made stronger to rectify the depiction of female characters in the original film.

Unlike Savini's film, Broadstreet's project was not affiliated with Romero. Director Doug Schulze's film Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead relates the story of a group of horror film fans who become involved in a "real-life" version of the film.

Due to the film's public domain status, several independent film companies have also done remakes of the film. At the suggestion of Bill Hinzman the actor who played the zombie which first attacks Barbra in the graveyard and kills her brother Johnny at the beginning of the original film , composers Todd Goodman and Stephen Catanzarite composed an opera Night of the Living Dead based on the film.

Romero revolutionized the horror film genre with Night of the Living Dead ; according to Almar Haflidason of the BBC , the film represented "a new dawn in horror film-making".

While the word "zombie" itself is never used—the word used in the film is ghoul —Romero's film introduced the theme of zombies as reanimated, flesh-eating cannibals.

To me, zombies were still those boys in the Caribbean doing the wetwork for [Bela] Lugosi. As one film historian points out, horror prior to Romero's film had mostly involved rubber masks and costumes, cardboard sets, or mysterious figures lurking in the shadows.

They were set in locations far removed from rural and suburban America. Since its release, some critics and film historians have interpreted Night of the Living Dead as a subversive film that critiques s American society, international Cold War politics and domestic racism.

Elliot Stein of The Village Voice saw the film as an ardent critique of American involvement in the Vietnam War , arguing that it "was not set in Transylvania , but Pennsylvania — this was Middle America at war, and the zombie carnage seemed a grotesque echo of the conflict then raging in Vietnam.

While she admits that "there are no Vietnamese in Night of the Living Dead , She points to aspects of the Vietnam War paralleled in the film: grainy black-and-white newsreels, search and destroy operations, helicopters, and graphic carnage.

While George Romero denied he considered race when casting Duane Jones, reviewer Mark Deming notes that "the grim fate of Duane Jones, the sole heroic figure and only African-American, had added resonance with the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr.

Other prevalent themes included "disillusionment with government and patriarchal nuclear family" [] and "the flaws inherent in the media, local and federal government agencies, and the entire mechanism of civil defense".

Everybody had a 'message'. The anger and attitude and all that's there is just because it was the Sixties. We lived at the farmhouse, so we were always into raps about the implication and the meaning, so some of that crept in.

Erotic Nights of the Living Dead was released in and was not a large success. I had endeavored to mingle my two favorite genres, tending more toward the erotic side in this case, but the film was rejected by the public.

In , Louis Paul wrote in a chapter devoted to D'Amato that the film "is pure cinema horror trash, but watchable nonetheless.

In the history of the Italian horror film there is no other feature film quite like it. In , Danny Shipka, author of Perverse Titillation: The Exploitation Cinema of Italy, Spain and France, gave both Porno Holocaust and Erotic Nights of the Living Dead a negative review, criticising the acting, gore effects and sex scenes , and stated that the merging of "hard-core sex and extreme violence is disturbing" [1] The book Zombie Movies: The Ultimate Guide describes the film as "one of the worst if not the worst Italian zombie movie ever made".

Running time. The film begins in a madhouse, with D'Amato regular George Eastman who, intriguingly, wrote this film staring back out of the screen at us through a wired fence.

We then follow a pretty young inmate as she searches out Eastman in the bowels of the institution, finding him and engaging in passionate, unbridled softcore sex.

A shambolic, drooling maniac has also followed them, and he keeps at a distance, touching himself and lolling his tongue as he peaks at their pleasures.

We could almost take this as a meta-cinematic representation of D'Amato's cinema — we the audience are the drooling lunatic voyeurs watching our own fellow madmen portrayed in flagrante on D'Amato's cinematic canvas.

The plot itself now begins, as Eastman is revealed as the island-hopping skipper on a small schooner somewhere in the Caribbean, operating a sea-bound taxi service for wealthy visitors.

He humours the rich men whilst lusting after their booty-prize women. Meanwhile, we follow Mark Shannon's property developer Wilson as he sources information on a local island, hoping to build a luxury resort there, and in the meantime ogle and frolic with the local whores.

His frolicking set the hardcore action of the film in motion, as the whores explicitly fellate him in the shower and he enacts cunnilingus with them on his hotel bed.

After cutting between Eastman and Shannon for a while, the two come together when the skipper agrees to take the developer and a gold-digger he has picked up to the island ripe for developing.

But we've heard sinister things about this place, the so-called Cat Island: it is home to a hoard of zombies headed by a cat!

This is a long, slow, melancholy scene — scored with wistful music — in which the skipper, alone in the bar, watches the act with interest, amusement, impressed but still with a nagging feeling of loneliness.

In D'Amato's universe, the viewer is alone, shown exotic and erotic sights but removed, alienated, atomised and ultimately sad.

The skipper and his two passengers sail to Cat Island and there encounter an old black man with an egg-shaped disfigurement on his forehead and his luscious granddaughter, played with an exquisite lack of affect by Laura Gemser.

They warn the visitors against messing with things but Wilson insults them, offers them money and generally causes offence. Gradually, the dead rise and interrupt the various erotic scenes which ensure, killing Wilson and aggressively establishing their ownership of the island.

Gemser is a kind of succubus, making love to the visitors whilst the dead rise in the background. The old man gives the skipper a juju which has some effectiveness in warding off the dead but which is lost in the final melee, leaving the skipper vulnerable.

He does escape with the gold-digger but they have both been driven mad by the experience, ending up making manic love which puts them right where we first saw them, in the lunatic asylum.

Their lovemaking and the drooling idiot's view of this is interrupted by the guards. Skipper and girl are dragged back to their cells they are convicted of Wilson's death and cannibalisation and the loon is told that he should stop playing with himself and grow up.

The audience are thus instructed to put their own private parts away and the film ends. Erotic or Sexy, as the credits have it Nights of the Living Dead doesn't altogether work — it is over-long, languorous and under-developed in terms of plot.

Yet its mix of hardcore porn, extreme gore and softcore frolicking make it a compelling example of D'Amato's refusal to stay put in any one genre.

In throwing - almost willy-nilly - meat shots, coy fondling, bloody death and monsters at us whilst constantly reminding us of his male characters' ultimately sad position as voyeurs, sometimes conscious and lonely, sometimes drooling and out-of-control, and by suggesting that sex in the face of colonial exploitation and strident displays of wealth, he does go someway to offering a compelling vision of late 20th century Western man on the rocks of alienated enjoyment, whose erotic nights are indeed those of the living dead.

Coventry 30 December In case you always wondered or worried whether or not you would get aroused by the sight of zombies having sexual intercourse In spite of what the title suggests, "Erotic Nights of the Living Dead" does not feature copulating undead or strip-dancing corpses.

This merely is a routine Italian zombie film, like "Zombi 2" or "Zombie Holocaust", with a handful of hardcore sex sequences thrown in during the first half hour.

And as crazy as it may sound, it actually is a pretty decent zombie movie if you just ignore these totally redundant porno moments and focus on the beautiful island location and rather stylish gory make-up effects.

There's the typically obnoxious businessman who buys a tropical island with a vicious reputation and intends to build a tourist resort there.

Along with a macho sailer and a whore he picked up in some hotel, he goes to scout the place but stumbles upon an uncanny old man and his ghostly granddaughter that rule over the island.

Laura Gemser, ravishing cult siren and regular D'Amato nymph, stars as the mysterious island girl but her role is rather limited and she doesn't really show much of her enchanting body.

George Eastman clearly is in great shape again as the stud, but he still doesn't manage to script down one reasonably good dialogue.

There are a couple of atmospheric zombie-attacks and explicit gore. You can't possibly expect more from a Joe D'Amato film, apart from sleazy oddities in the script maybe, like the girl who ingeniously uncorks a bottle of champagne by using her vagina only!

Ky-D 21 May For a film to have 'erotic' in the title, the film should have erotic scenes. If a film has 'living dead' in the title, there should be some good gut munching.

And finally, if a film has 'night of' in the title, the film should be shot at night. But then again, this is a Joe D'Amato flick.

Story: people go to investigate an island, come across some creepy natives, have lots of sex and get eaten. There is plenty of nudity and hard-core sexual escapades on display if you have the uncut version , but not a bit of it is erotic or arousing.

Matters are further complicated by the obvious fact that some of the actors are not at all comfortable with bearing it all, taking the blandly shot scenes and making them all the more dull.

For a film like this, violence is the answer, or should have been. D'amato is unusually thin-skinned about laying on the gore.

There are a couple of choice bits, but nothing spectacular. If it weren't bad enough that the zombies don't do a whole hell of a lot, it's worse that they take forever to finally start reeking havoc.

I suppose the intention was to build suspense, but with a film like this what's the point. So how well is it made then? For a film supposedly occurring mostly at night it is readily apparent that most all of the movie was shot during then day then given the day-for-night treatment.

The dubbing is dubious and the limited effects some what suspect. A mid-range rating for a bad movie that will undoubtedly find a niche audience; you know who you are.

An American businessman wants to build a hotel on a remote island, so he has someone sail him and his girlfriend there to check it out. The zombie scenes seem tacked on as an afterthought, so as a horror film this doesn't really work that well.

However due to the ridiculous dialog and the hardcore sex scenes the film MIGHT be worth it for drunken party type viewing, but even that is stretching it pardon the pun Feel free to skip this one, as it's only remote interesting as a curiosity.

That being said the way champagne is uncorked in the film is ingenious. Now lets talk about the zombies real quick their cool oldfashiond slow zombi 2 like zombies there is a good amount of zombi action.

Also its dubbed so bad that you will be chuckling a lot so I am done talking about it now its time for you to find this and see it you wont forget it!!

The sleaze contained in this movie is far from being enough to match a real porno feature, but is sufficent to make the viewer smile. Since the only existing print is in italian, I didn't get the whole story, but I sure laughed to death when I first saw the guy with the huge penis.

D'Amato is very daring to mix porno and horror like this. It could have frightened or disgusted porno lovers, and it could have shocked horror fans, but since I am both I really enjoyed the movie.

At first, I didn't believe the "monster" would rape his "victims" for real, but the "appendice" is real, and he even chokes a girl to death with it!

Definitly a movie you have to see if you like trashy horror. The moments where George Eastman appears are just hilarious. And what can I say about the music?

Find it, and enjoy it. Three people head for a deserted island to have a lot of sex and to see if a hotel could be built on the island. They should have listened to all the rumors because zombies are there waiting.

This is an extremely weird and bizarre film because the producer's wanted two films made. One a porno and another a horror film so the director just combined the two elements.

Running at nearly two hours this thing goes on for way too long, which is why I wish the hardcore sex scenes would have been removed.

There's a "soft" version out there that I keep meaning to see because I'm sure I'd like the film better minus the sex scenes.

The zombie footage on the other hand is wonderfully done with a lot of great atmosphere and gore. D'Amato was a master behind the camera and the cinematography here is terrific as is the music score.

For years I had been wanting to check this version out because I felt that the hardcore scenes in the uncut version were all rather ugly and did nothing erotic and instead they just dragged the film down.

It was interesting watching the film without the porn scenes because you realize that the Joe D'Amato film has more problems than just the porn stuff.

For starters, even without the hardcore sex there's way too many softcore scenes that are also not erotic. I was really surprised to see how silly the majority of the scenes are because it's clear that the main intent was just to show sex.

Another major problem with the picture is that it just takes them way too long to finally get to the island where the zombie stuff happens. The zombies, as great as they are, are pretty much wasted because outside a couple scenes early on, the majority of their screen time happens at the very end of the movie.

It's really a shame that they weren't given more screen time because I felt the horror elements were quite strong and they keep the movie interesting.

Even though he was unable to make anything erotic, D'Amato did do a good job building up a rather bizarre atmosphere. This version clocks in at minutes, which means it is missing twelve minutes worth of hardcore scenes.

So, is this version better? I would say that it is simply because it's shorter and as I said, the hardcore scenes were rather ugly and added nothing to the picture.

Anyone who has seen Porno Holocaust will know exactly what to expect from Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, as the two films feature basically the same cast and plot lines.

Last time I checked, the living dead aren't sexy and mixing an average zombie film with a load of porn isn't exactly a guaranteed recipe for success.

As mentioned, the plot is basically the same as the one in Porno Holocaust and focuses on an isolated island. A group of sex starved or not people travel to the island for some reason or another, but naturally the island is infested with zombies.

This doesn't stop the travellers having sex with each other every five minutes, the zombies do prove to be a bit of a nuisance.

That's about the long and short of the plot really This film is slightly better than Porno Holocaust, but only slightly. The two films suffer from the same main problems: Erotic Nights of the Living Dead is also far too long, and it takes too long for anything to happen too.

The sex is mostly quite boring too, which obviously does the film no favours. The film features two of exploitation cinema's biggest stars in George Eastman also the writer and Laura Gemser.

Gemser, however, doesn't turn up until we get over the halfway point. There's a fair bit of gore in the film, some of it quite hardcore, but it's clear that the sex is the main focus.

The zombies themselves are the typical Italian style crusty looking things; not very convincing! As mentioned, the film is far too long and the plot really drags on numerous occasions, which is a shame.

There really isn't much to this film; it's very much what you'd expect, so if you're looking for something substantial then look elsewhere!

I can't really say that I found Erotic Nights of the Living Dead all that enjoyable so I won't be recommending it, but I guess some sleaze fans may get a kick out of it.

Taking along companion Fiona, Dirce Funari they seem initially weary of the journey due to local legends about a race of zombies controlled by an evil cat creature, they land on the island and find that it would make an excellent high-end resort.

It's also one of my personal favorites that I've watched many times. This isn't a gore movie, so it isn't recommended if you are searching for a typical zombie film that's loaded with violence and gore.

In fact, it probably has one of the lowest body counts in a zombie film. With a body count of 3, it'll surely disappoint many.

Aside from the zombies killing those 3 people, you get to see some ooze from the zombies towards the end. When a guy is trying to kill the corpses, he gouges out ones eyes, decapitates another and impales another one with some ooze instead of blood spilling from the zombies.

There's also some bloodless gunshot hits, and there's one cheap shotgun blast to a zombies face. A good but dimly lit scene when Gemser bites a guys manhood off is cool, and this is followed by a quick gut munching scene that isn't extreme or graphic.

The other 2 people that the zombies kill consist of some biting. There's no extreme gore in the movie; however I still think it's highly underrated.

I liked the macabre story about a group traveling to a place that they call "Cat Island. The cat, apparently, might be the leader of the zombies.

There's a good scene towards the climax that involves a medallion that's thrown to the ground that was done without CGI effects; I guess some may think it's a quick jump scare.

The film has some hardcore masturbation shots, a hardcore threesome, and another porn shot involving a champagne bottle. It's loaded with full nudity from really good looking women, has excellent soundtracks and scenery, and the quality of the atmosphere on the island is good.

The superb soundtracks, in my opinion, really carry the film. However, despite how much I like the film, many others will just be bored. It's slow in many parts, and once they get to the island, there's a lot of scenes of you just looking at the place.

Since I like D' Amato's directing style, I thought the directing was excellent, and I also liked the cloaked walking corpses.

There's also a really ugly maggot faced zombie on an autopsy table that is worth mentioning. It's a great grindhouse classic, but it won't appeal to many and isn't for most mainstream horror fans.

There's an extra that shows daytime scenes of some of the night scenes; these parts were shot during the day and darkened for the actual film to make it look like it was shot at night.

The photo gallery is good, and I thought the DVD quality is excellent. Shriek Show released 2 DVD versions of this film. Just make sure you get the uncut X version if you want to buy it.

Here's an update. It now came out on Blu-ray and I got it. The extra feature with Shannon is excellent. The movie is now is shown with the original Italian title.

I thought the quality was really nice. This movie has divided fans of Joe D'Amato, horror, zombies and sexploitation for decades now, and there's good reason for it.

The first part of the film is a straight up porno film indicative of almost all Europorn of its day. The latter part is a tepid horror film about the resurrection of the living dead on a tropical island, and even creates a further rift among horror aficionados and zombie freaks about whether the island's inhabitants are just garden variety plain old undead or the upper elitist echelon, the zombie nation zombie fans take their zombie worship very seriously, I might add.

And, in between, there's just your average, standard travelogue exploitation we've seen hundreds of times before.

There's no set up, no introductory plot, just bad music, bad acting, bad editing and lots of 'coitus interuptus', as none of the sex is finished - in the middle of each scene, the scissor edits kick in, and we're whisked away to someplace we didn't wish to be It uses most of the same cast and scenery locations from a similar film of D'Amato's, 'Porno Holocaust', which was filmed at or around the same time, which I think I preferred to this one - 'can't be sure 'till I suffer through it again I'm a closet cine-masochist, I guess.

As far as Laura Gemser goes, aside from a brief glimpse of her 35 minutes into the film, we don't get to see her form or hear her speak till 50 minutes into the island undead saga, so she shouldn't be billed as the star of this flick.

She barely gets any screen time, and unveils herself to us only once that I can remember, so it's a total disappointment there.

Huge bummer So what we're left with is yet another flick D'Amato didn't have his heart or head in, a movie that can't decide whether it wants to be a horror flick or a sexploitation-porn film, and ultimately ends up as not much of either.

It might just kill ya Vampires have often been portrayed as seductive and sexy. Even werewolves are getting their day in the romance novels.

But erotic zombies? Not really. The zombies here are not portrayed in any erotic manner, other than Laura Gemser lending her presence to the scene.

Instead, the uncensored sex is provided by a hotel executive scouting a location to build a hotel. For some unknown reason he has chosen a remote island that seems to be completely covered in burial grounds.

Laura Gemser is on the side of the interned. So what happens when capitalism tries to clash with the dead and buried?

The dead become restless. What follows is rather typical of the low budget zombie films. The island becomes overrun with hundreds of zombies pushing up through the dirt to take their revenge on the living.

The film could have used a little more plot to tie it together so we would know why the site was picked, that the developers knew about the graves but disregarded them, etc.

What we do wind up with is the sexy Laura Gemser, a bit of explicit sex, and lots of walking corpses. Actually, not so bad for a low-budget zombie film.

If you are of fan of the low-budget zombie genre you know who you are then you will probably get a kick out of this film.

If you are interested in seeing a hardcore epic that happens to include zombies, then you will be disappointed by the brief, though explicit, footage.

If you know what you are hoping to find then you will know if this one is for you. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.

Even after reading the reviews of this film, I still thought I would give it a try, since I'm a big zombie movie fan. Basically, it is at least half porno.

Not like mild nudity, but actual cheesy porno, with oral and lesbian scenes and everything. I had to fast forward a good chunk of the movie.

But, the zombies looked kind of cool, and there were lots of them, and the music was good. If it weren't for all the porn, it might be ok, but it's not worth buying, maybe just watching once to laugh at.

In case you always wondered or worried whether or not you would get aroused by the sight of zombies having sexual intercourse In spite of what the title suggests, "Erotic Nights of the Living Dead" does not feature copulating undead or strip-dancing corpses.

Even though warned away from the place by local Luna, Laura Gemser they decide to stay there and use the island for their original intent.

Despite more warnings, a horde of the living dead arise from the grounds and stalk them through the island, forcing them to realize the reason for the zombie rampage and set out to stop it before they all become prey to the shuffling creatures.

The Good News: This one had some rather good qualities to it when it tried to. The biggest plus to it is the fact that there's some rather good stuff to come from the film's inclusion of hardcore porn into the zombie film genre.

Along with the usual Euro-sleaze standard of showing off full nudity from the females involved, this one goes the extra mile and uses it to insert male nudity into the mix with a variety of different options.

The main one is a full-on, extended and extremely graphic threesome that starts off with an explicit shower scene, then moves on into the hardcore sex scene that includes oral, penetration and more.

That it goes so far in presenting everything makes it standout, and the other sex scenes presented throughout aren't as bad either. These are also packed into the beginning of the film, giving this part of the film a sleazy taste that, along with copious amounts of nudity from non-sexual encounters presented, leave a really sleazy feel to these scenes.

Most of them fail, though, when compared to a bottle trick accompanied by a stripper's stage show that is easily one of the most dirty and disgusting scenes imaginable for these films.

Even a lesbian romp, kept to a soft-core focus due to the extremity of the previous entries, is a delight and somewhat fun.

The zombie footage mixed in, what little there is, is also really nice and manages to get a creepy feeling or two from the scenes, as it comes with the grossly-designed, long-dead and rotting look that really sums up the term zombie in great order, looking quite unique and really great.

The scenes of them emerging out of the sand is a sight to behold, with the heaving earth giving way to the creatures in a long, extended sequence that gives the chills, and the resulting action scenes provide plenty of life to the film.

The last plus is the moody cinematography on display, giving the island scenes a really beautiful look and the cemetery scenes an eerie air that sets up what's to come nicely.

These here are what help the film along. The Bad News: This one here did have a few problems with it. One of the biggest here is the simple fact of the inclusion of so much hardcore footage into the film.

This is the kind of stuff that can appear to turn off or morally offend the more prudish out there that merely want to see zombies ripping corpses apart and have no desire to see such kind of scenes.

The fact that it goes into the hardcore realm with it's sex and nudity, even so much as doing it often as well, is going to be a struggle for those with these values, plus it also manages to bring up the film's other big problem in that, the inclusion of all that footage results in the film just dragging out for no reason.

This is easily a good half-hour too long, most of which is the hardcore footage boosting the length as the film stops in it's tracks and indulges in them for no purpose other than it can, forcing everything else to come after it and making it feel way too long.

That also affects the zombie scenes in here, as they're rarely given any screen time other than the very end, which is a sad fact that they're reduced to a cameo role in their own movie.

The last flaw in here is the rather unusual manner of the ghost inserted into the film, which has very little sense to it and is overall sloppily done.

These here are the film's problems. The Final Verdict: A weird conundrum, as it mixes together the extremes of everything yet not really doing much with them.

This one could be worthwhile if you've got a strong stomach and don't mind over-bearing amounts of Euro-sleaze or fans of zombie films, but those with prudish values are advised to seek out a censored version or ignore altogether.

Forgotten cult classics 2 DJ Inferno 7 July An old man who lives there with his beautiful daughter gets an army of zombies onto his neck However, "Erotic Nights of the living dead" has truly its great moments!

Highly recommended to all those people who are looking for a perfect mixture between horror and sex People Cat tedg 4 November Spoilers herein.

I'm interested in genre mixing. Its a common thing, especially with various humor components. The gore branch of horror and the porn branch of the sex film try to be mixed here.

I say gore rather than zombies because though zombies appear, the form is not that of a zombie flick. The gore and porn parts are okay I guess, except in the porn department these really are much nicer looking women than usual.

This comment is on the minute version which seems to be more complete than other 'uncut' versions. It seemed pretty explicit to me except for anything involving the native girl.

The mood, especially with the score, is effective. But the pacing is a killer. Here's the real problem: the sex stuff and the horror parts of the plot have nothing to do with each other.

Very few films mix the erotic and frightening. The only one I can recall is Kinski's 'Cat People. Ted's Evaluation -- 1 of 3: You can find something better to do with this part of your life.

Gemser should have continued played Emmanuelle and I'm surprised she didn't here. Especially for a Joe D'Amato movie.

There's surprisingly little gore for a film of this scope, and the zombie plot looks like it was thrown in there as a pretext for the soft-core lesbian scenes between Gemser and Funari.

There's also soft core sex scenes between Eastman and Gemser and between Cersosimo and Funari as well as the previously mentioned hard-core sex scene.

Plot concerns George Eastman taking Manlio Cersosimo and his girlfriend Dirce Funari to an island so he can scout locations for a new hotel resort. A female spirit Laura Gemser and an old man conjure up the dead buried on the island to go after these three and stop any development from taking place.

Eastman and Funari wind up in a 'mental institution' after all this. Not much in the line of extras, though. There's also a half-way decent electronic score by Marcello Giombini.

Mostly deserves a yawn EVOL 15 February Unfortunately though, don't expect any cool undead-copulation as the title would suggest, you won't get it here.

But you will get plenty of living people's tits and ass, so I guess that counts for something This one concerns a businessman who buys an island to put up a big resort hotel.

Of course, the island has some local lore around it involving zombies that live there. Before embarking on his journey to check the island out, Mr.

Business bangs two hookers in his hotel room. Pretty decent hardcore sex action, if you dig big 70's puss-fro's and protracted, semi-erect blow-jobs featuring a guy that looks like Magnum P.

Then he bones the lady that's staying next door seems that Magnum is quite a pimp The next day Magnum and The-Girl-Next-Door head to the docks to commission a boat and sailor to take them to the island.

The boat ride is just another excuse to show some more extended tits and ass scenes, but unfortunately, other than the hooker-sandwich in the beginning, there's no more "hardcore" sex to be had in this film unless you consider one VERY amusing scene where a stripper graphically uncorks a bottle of champagne without use of her hands "hardcore" The adventurous three-some begin exploring the island, and find that it's not completely uninhabited.

There's a real old guy with a big lump on his head, and his grand-daughter played by an anorexically thin but still smokin' hot Laura Gemser Ol' Bump-Head tells the trespassers that they should probably roll-out, but Magnum ain't hearin' it.

Bump-Head gives the sailor some kind of little statue that's supposed to protect him against the zombies, and somewhere along the line, we find out that Gemser is some sort of ghost or something that obviously doesn't like to give head, which is proved in one particularly hilarious penis-chomping scene Sound hard to follow?

Trust me it's not - it's just poorly written. Basically, ENOTLD is a film whose main purpose is to cram as much gratuitous nudity and sex as possible into it, while still straining to maintain some sort of "plot" as a horror film.

The sleaze is hot-and-heavy, although I wish that there would have been some more XXX scenes, as seeing them in the very beginning and then not at all through the rest of the film was kind of "anti-climactic".

Actually, as a porn film, it doesn't really either - but the combination of the two make this one somehow work out to be pretty entertaining.

Well this is a real mess of a film. It's worthy of watching at a drive-in, where you don't have to pay much attention to the plot because you are too busy Watch it on DVD, however, like I did, and you'll be in for a real miserable time.

Others have described the plot so I won't comment on that.
